Gundam 2009: The 30th Anniversary
On March 11th, the Bandai Namco Group held a press event at the Hotel Grand Pacific LE DAIBA in the Daiba region of Tokyo. The event was to announce the 30th anniversary of Gundam and Bandai Namco’s plans concerning Gundam for 2009.
In conjunction with their “Gundam 30th Anniversary Project” concept of “Always Beginning”, Bandai Namco’s plans for 2009 include three stages, which they refer to as “Real G”, “Feel G” and “Soul G”.
The first stage, “Real G”, will include the construction of an 18 metre tall 1:1 scale Gundam figure which will be displayed at the Shiokaze Park in the Daiba region of Tokyo. This full size Gundam figure will have a moveable head (up, down, left and right), 50 points of illumination and 14 points of mist-jet release. Visitors will be given the opportunity to walk up to the base of this figure for photo opportunities, but gimmick controls are for authorized personnel only. The figure will be displayed starting in July for a period of two months, after which, the figure will most likely be relocated to a yet-to-be-disclosed permanent location. Since the figure will be displayed in a public park, viewing the figure will be free of charge.
The second stage, “Feel G”, will be in the form of the Gundam 30th Anniversary Exposition which will be held at the Tokyo Big Sight on August 21st, 22nd and 23rd. The three day Expo, mostly free of charge, is expected to be an extensive event which will cover every aspect of the last 30 years of Gundam.
The third stage, “Soul G”, will be a major music event with performers who have been involved in the musical aspects of Gundam over the past three decades. Music and songs from every TV, OVA and Movie production will be represented. However, details beyond this have yet to be worked out.
